Obsidian is a dark purple block with extremely high hardness and blast resistance. It is created when flowing water comes into contact with a lava source block. Obsidian is one of the strongest obtainable blocks in Minecraft and is commonly used for defensive builds, important crafting recipes, and Nether portals.
How to Obtain Obsidian
The easiest way to obtain obsidian is by pouring water over a lava source block. After the lava turns into obsidian, it can be mined using a diamond pickaxe or netherite pickaxe. Mining it with any weaker tool will not drop the block.

Obsidian can also be found naturally in ruined portals, End structures, and certain generated locations. Players may obtain it from some loot chests or through bartering with piglins.
Uses of Obsidian
Obsidian is mainly used for crafting and construction. It is required to create:

- Nether portals
- Enchanting tables
- Beacons
- Ender chests
- End crystals
Because of its high blast resistance, obsidian is also useful for building protected bases, defensive walls, and structures that need strong resistance against explosions. However, it is not completely indestructible, as the Wither can destroy it under certain conditions.
