A cave, also known as a cavern, is a common naturally generated terrain feature found underground in Minecraft. Caves are made up of open spaces with different shapes and sizes, including narrow tunnels, winding passages, and massive underground chambers. They often connect with other caves, ravines, mineshafts, monster rooms, and various underground structures.

Caves are important locations for mining and exploration because they expose large amounts of stone, deepslate, and valuable ores. Players can discover resources such as coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis lazuli, and diamonds while exploring these underground areas. However, caves can also contain hostile mobs because of their low light levels, making them dangerous without proper preparation.
Cave Generation
Caves are generated naturally during world creation and can appear at different underground heights. Some cave systems may extend from near the surface to deep underground areas. When a cave reaches the surface, it can create a natural entrance. In certain biomes, caves may also connect with the surrounding terrain, creating unusual openings and entrances.

The shape of a cave depends on how it is generated. Some caves form as long branching tunnels, while others create large open caverns with multiple levels. Cave systems can also intersect with water bodies, lava pools, and other generated structures.
Types of Caves
Minecraft caves are generally divided into two main generation types: carver caves and noise caves.
- Carver Caves: These caves are formed by carving tunnels and chambers through the terrain. They usually contain winding passages, branches, and occasional large rooms.

- Noise Caves: These caves are generated using noise-based terrain generation and create more varied underground shapes. They include cheese caves, spaghetti caves, and noodle caves.

Noise Cave Variations
Cheese caves are large, open underground chambers that often expose many ores and may contain tall stone pillars. Spaghetti caves are long, winding tunnels that travel through the underground. Noodle caves are thinner and more twisting versions of spaghetti caves, usually forming narrow passages.
Aquifers
Aquifers are underground systems that generate bodies of water or lava inside cave networks. They can create underground lakes, flooded chambers, waterfalls, and liquid-filled passages. Aquifers make cave exploration more unpredictable and add more variety to Minecraft’s underground generation.

Because caves can contain hostile mobs, sudden drops, lava, and confusing pathways, players should carry torches, food, suitable tools, armor, and a water bucket before exploring.
